Information below provided by the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel.

What is a pressure ulcer/injury?

  • Once called bedsores, pressure injuries are localized damage to the skin and underlying soft tissue, usually over a bony prominence or related to a medical or other device.
  • The injury occurs as a result of intense and/or prolonged pressure or pressure in combination with shear.
  • The injury can present as intact skin or an open ulcer and may be painful.
  • The tolerance of soft tissue for pressure and shear may also be affected by microclimate, nutrition, perfusion, co-morbidities and condition of the soft tissue.

How common are pressure ulcer/injuries?

  • Pressure injuries claim the lives of over 60,000 people each year and cost the United States healthcare system over $11 billion annually.
  • 2.5 million Americans get pressure injuries every year, and over the past 5 years, the NPIAP has seen a trend of more severe pressure injuries.

Why is prevention important?

  • Prevention will reduce the high incidence of pressure ulcer/injuries.
  • Prevention can also reduce the pain associated with pressure-related injuries, which may develop into pressure injuries. And a high percentage of resultant pressure injuries lead to death.
